My name is John Vanderwyst, and I am honored to be a technology education instructor at Marathon High School. I feel so privileged because here students can easily "get connected." This district strives to provide a rich, whole-child education so that all ages can closely connect with staff, the local community, and opportunities after graduation.
Using my experiences as leverage, I aim to prepare all students for lifelong success. Since the beginning of my teaching career in 2007, I have been continually improving my approaches to maximize student achievement through projects that put knowledge to use from multiple subject areas. Earning my Master's Degree from UW-River Falls, Bachelor's Degree from UW-Stout, tutoring college-level courses (math, writing, and architectural design), and having experiences in construction and factory-work have helped with these efforts. Immediately after accepting this teaching position in 2014, I began contacting local teachers, business/industry leaders, and colleges. Major headway has been made in this area to ensure that my students are receiving an education that is desired by employers and colleges. Know that I will always continue in these efforts to stay up-to-date with the needs of society in order to provide all students with meaningful experiences that give them leverage in their own lives.
Outside of teaching, I love spending time with family and friends. I enjoy the company and competition of others. It is not uncommon for me to participate in some friendly banter with those close to me during board games, cards, racquetball, and ping-pong to name a few. Beyond that, I simply enjoy fixing up the house and spending quality time with my wife, Amy.
